The National (NBA) Basketball Games Association is one of the largest basketball league in the United States. NBA basketball is very popular globally, with many players participating every year from several countries. The major stars in the league are Pau Gasol from Spain, Dirk Nowitski from Germany, Manu Ginobili from Argentina, Tony Parker from France, and Yao Ming from China.
History Of The NBA Basketball
Basketball Association of America (BAA) was established in 1946. The first basketball game was played between the New York Knickerbockers and Toronto Huskies in Toronto, Canada. In 1949 the NBA association was formed with the merger of two rival organizations, the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America.
At the starting of the NBA there were17 teams, but these numbers are too many and unnecessarily stretch the whole event. So in order to reduce the numbers, in the next few years, they merged all teams until the number was being down to eight teams. NBA Association introduced the shot clock of 24 seconds in 1954 in order to speed up the game. The three-point shot was also introduced in the NBA season of 1979-80. It was a significant change which was made by the association.
After that, the league has thirty teams and one team of Canada. Due to the increasing popularity of the NBA seasons, many superstar players have been globally gaining stardom such as Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James.
In the early 1980s, the NBA was faced money-losing franchises, low crowd, decreasing television ratings, and limited national exposure. The league was then again rebounded by the David Stern, NBA commissioner from 1984, whose initiative help the league to transform into an international entertainment company. The marketing team highlighted star players such as Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and Magic Johnson. The other significant changes were done on player salaries, lucrative broadcast rights for network and cable television.
NBA Basketball Teams
The current year league has 30 teams in the NBA. The 30 teams were majorly distributed into two major conferences. There are three divisions of 5 teams in each conference. The two zones are the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference
NBA Season And Playoffs
In a league, each NBA team has to play 82 regular-season games. They play 41 games at home ground and remaining 41 outside. Two team in the NBA plays with each other at least once.
The top winning eight teams in each league qualify for the playoffs. Teams are selected as per their records and if they won in their division. The best team of the league plays with the worst team (1 vs. 8) and so on. The team with the best record gets the advantage to play on home court.
For the women players, the NBA has formed the Woman’s National Basketball Association. It is a woman professional basketball league and started in 1997. Now every team has independent owners. In the current season 12 teams in the WNBA. Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson are some of the WNBA star players over the years.
